Family and Friends Tour: Richmond, VA

We left Kentucky Tuesday morning, making it to sister Kathy's in Richmond in time for a supper of Chip's chicken stew. On Wednesday, after breakfast at the Dairy Bar and stops at the butchers for the turkey, the bakery for cupcakes and the seafood shop for smoked salmon, family started arriving.

Nephew Jimmy got in around 3 and the Hoke family convened for their traditional pre-Thanksgiving Mexican food.

Lunch on Thursday included Bloody Mary's (Dan and Chip's mom shown here)

And a spread of smoked salmon, Kathy's homemade pimento cheese,

And other assorted goodies

After naps, we started again.

Nephew Harry and I took pictures

While the turkey rested

And Dan showed off the possum loin.

We shared a feast

that included Chip's homemade biscuits. He has certainly channeled our mama Gwen.

And Skyping with nephew Michael on his 23rd birthday.

We are fixin to pull out the leftovers and do it all again, this time without Jimmy who had to leave this morning. Tomorrow, we head to S.C.

Family and Friends Tour: Kentucky

We left Casper on Thursday morning, November 15, and after two long and thankfully uneventful, days on the road, we arrived at Jim (Dan's brother) and Jewel Hauck's home outside Shelbyville on Friday night. Saturday, we rested and enjoyed re-connecting with Jim and Jewel and eating real southern cornbread and bean soup that Jewel--a native of the Philippines--had made.

On Sunday, Jim and Jewel went to church and we headed to Louisville, first to eat brunch at Lynn's Paradise Cafe

and then to volunteer at the fall fundraiser for the St. Joseph's Home, a nursing home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor. Dan comes back twice a year to volunteer at the fundraisers (in the spring it's the Turtle Derby). He's been bussing tables in the main dining room for 18 years. This was the first time I volunteered in said dining room, cleaning off the remains of chicken dinners and re-setting the tables. We worked a double shift, from noon to 6 pm.

These semi-annual fundraisers are a Hauck family tradition. Dan's uncle George

and his cousins Lynn and husband Harvey

and Karen

sold chicken dinner tickets (700 of them this year) and Dan, Jim, Jewel, and I worked the dining room. Jewel is a master at finding bargains and found several of them.

While I was cleaning tables, a man eating his dinner handed me $5 and asked me to put it on the "cake cover all" being announced over the loudspeaker. He told me his name was Bob.

I didn't even know what a cake cover all was. It turned out to be a game of chance where every number on the board has to be covered on the board with a quarter before a wheel is spun to determine the winner of a cake, in this case a bourbon barrel cake. So Bob had 20 chances to win and I had 20 quarters to place, much to the amusement of the other cake cover all participants.

We won with #17, but when I returned with the cake, Bob was gone. I took the cake to the front desk and had them announce that Bob had won the cake, but he didn't claim it until he saw me walking down the hall and asked me if he had won. "Yes,"I said and took him to claim his winnings. Turns out, he was supposed to be fly fishing in Wyoming, but bad weather had cancelled the trip. At least he got a bourbon barrel cake!
